From the Song Vault: Freedom (Darrell Evans)

As folks in the USA enjoy a long weekend to celebrate the birthday of the country, one of the themes that resonates across the land is freedom. As I was listening to patriotic songs and seeing firework displays fill up my instagram and facebook feeds, the song Freedom by Darrell Evans kept popping up in my heart and mind.

This song takes me back to my college years. As a young worship leader it was the simple, guitar-driven progressions in the music of Darrell Evans that helped me establish myself as a leader of worship songs. To this day, I’m still very appreciative of those wonderful songs from the late 90s/early 2000s.

I asked Darrell to share briefly about the song and here’s what he said:

Freedom  was inspired by 3 Scriptures:

  • Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (2 Corinthians 3:17 ESV)
  • Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, (Colossians 2:6 ESV)
  • For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Romans 14:17 ESV)

It originally had an island feel before we messed with it in the studio.

At different times in my life, I have listened back and sung this song often to remind myself of the freedom I have in Christ, that I don’t have to give to temptation, that I must choose to walk in that freedom.

You can find Darrell Evans’ classic single Freedom on the album titled the same. And his latest project, Awesome God Is He also available at retailers.
