Thanks for the suggestions! I am the Director over the worship and have recently been challenged by our Sr. Pastor to work with the band/singers to kick it up a notch. What a timely article, thanks so much!

Well said Jeremy. I personally never think about the key of a song as to how singable it is. I figure if I can sing other people will sing it. I know I have a high voice....but each person has such a different range and most people can find some harmony, so I personally don't think it matters much.

love it! all great points. I'm going to use the "Tomlin" and "Tomlin-flat" line somewhere soon... probably be a great hit at parties!
anyways, thanks for taking the time to inspire those of us out there to get out of our comfort zones.
For me, I realize that it's not about the right notes, or perfect sound, but the quality of the heart behind the musician and leader.

Totally agree man:

Music Stands, low keys, and low volume = comfort. In all of our plush comfort we lose the worshipful heart.

I love how free I am to worship when I memorize my music.

I love tossing in a high key and hearing people "go for it."

I love cranking up the guitar and watching people dance.

If I did this stuff all the time it'd become the normal and "comfortable" and then I'd need to do something else to shake things up, but I love the concept man - keep it different and interesting. Worship was never meant to be boring.

Jeremy,
What a great post. I completely agree with all 3 points - they are all incredible ways to take it up to the next level.

"Key of Tomlin" ... now that's my favorite line of all! Hilarious!

We're seeing first hand the dilemma of people not singing out versus balancing the volume of the sound. We always find the same thing - if we can get away with turning it up more, the people seem to engage more ... then, we have to deal w/ the people complaining about the volume .. .when truth is, they probably weren't going to engage anyway.
