Loved the article, Fred. What I've learned in my years of ministry is that each man or woman of God is uniquely equipped. The Lord may have a person go the 'formal education' route, and has done so many, many times. But He may also select the unlikeliest individual, in whom He has bestowed great talent and leadership, that will rise from obscurity to lead and thrive in the ministry.
The Lord can, and will choose whom He will to do His work. And though there is a lot of wisdom in taking the 'formal education' route, I want to encourage any of you who are considering this to seek the Lord regarding your desires. He may well have the most unconventional route for you to take to enter into your ministry. Our only requirement as followers of Christ... is to follow Christ.

I love the balance you strike between talent and heart -- it's not an either/or but a both/and. Great article!

Smart article. I struggle with this. I'm the worship pastor at my church and I have zero training. I don't read a single note of music. I took one music class in college and that was nicknamed "Preacher Boy Music" by all of the other Theology majors.

Well thought out and well delivered Fred. I come from a music background and have been a sponge theologically speaking. I've found continuing education to be a blessing biblically and musically.

Tyler. Genius comment...hehe.
There's nothing I respect more than worship artists (ie, Tim Hughes) who clearly have deep theological understanding and communicate it clearly in their art...it is refreshing to be around worship leaders who aren't shallow in their writing or leading.

Great article, Fred. I think something that is increasingly important, especially in this day and age, is openness to change...the culture is changing so quickly, and the church has got to be at the forefront and even leading this progression.

I've definitely been at churches where, while the musicianship is excellent, it is stylistically irrelevant to the current culture...

Love what you said Fred. I think you are dead on here. As a worship leader in seminary I do think the value of advanced education is not valued in the arts as much as it could. Lots of people can lead a congregation in singing songs, but FEW can lead theologically, Biblically, and as a pastor during the week.
