Sunday Setlists #191

Share your worship confessionals, recaps, and setlists for the week of: Sunday, March 18, 2012

Welcome to the 191st consecutive week of “Sunday Setlists”. The purpose of “Sunday Setlists” is to share a recap of your worship services. What songs did you use, what arrangements? What worked really well and what didn’t work as well as you’d like? What issues did you have preparing? What is the sermon series? How about creative elements used in the service? You don’t have to be the pastor or worship leader to participate. We would really love to get reviews from the perspective of those in our congregations each week.

We introduced “Show Us Christ” A great new song that works as prayer and lead in to the sermon.

Tonight (and Friday night) I lead worship on piano which is something I haven’t done in over three years. It was so nice to feel more “me” as a worship leader. I really missed some of those old songs (that I cannot play on guitar). They’re like old friends you’ve not seen in so long yet when you meet up it’s as if no time has passed at all.

I lead worship as part of a student ministry, Campus Crusade, so this is technically a “Thursday Setlist” post, but I figured that’d be alright…
The subject that was talked about was “Black and White Effects of the Gospel”, and in this series we are going through the book of 1 John. So in preparation for this week, I was reading through the verses that were going to be covered, 1 John 2:28 – 4:12. As I was reading them, I was thinking, “Hmm, that reminds me of a song… Hmm, THAT reminds me of a song too… Okay, this is getting ridiculous, because THAT reminds me of a song too!”, and so here’s what we ended up doing:

    “Happy Day” – Tim Hughes
“How Deep the Father’s Love” – Stuart Townend

    Effects of the Gospel sermon

“Because of Your Love” – Phil Wickham (1 John 3:16-18)
“Our God” – Chris Tomlin (1 John 3:19-20)
“How He Loves” – David Crowder Band (1 John 4:10-12)

So before we did the last 3 songs, we read the verses immediately before the songs, and used the time of worship as a response to the awesome truths that scripture brings. I was a little hesitant to do “How He Loves” at first, and I know that there is sometimes a little uneasiness about the song, but after prayer and reading the verses more, it was definitely the right decision to do. I explained briefly before the song that there is a stark distinction between “God is love” and “Love is God”, and then the feedback I got from the group after was that it was a very Gospel focused time of worship, which was really encouraging for me as a leader.

We’re several weeks into a new format with 4 leaders up front. We’ve also been having more intense rehearsals, and it’s already beginning to pay dividends. The group was much tighter on all the songs this week.
