Leading a Youth Choir

Anyone else out there leading a youth choir? Several weeks ago some of the youth came to me because they are interested in singing in church. I spoke with the leadership team and they gave me the green light today to do this, but I need to give them a plan for how often, what types of songs and a budget. Now I am looking for some help because it is a new area of me as well. I found some sources on the internet, but thought this community would be a better place to get resources and information. Any help is much appreciated!

So, saying "choir' makes me think of the traditional choir, with altos, tenors, and such. Is that what you are doing, or is it something different?

I would wait to discuss how often they would perform until you see how committed they are and how they fit into the service.

I would google and search for some youth choirs --- I remember hearing one in Stockton, CA that was amazing. I can't remember what they were called, but their music was amazing. It could really contribute a lot and keep them involved.

Mike on Bass - not sure about a traditional choir. Two of the girls who brought this idea to me want to do Britt Nicole songs. The other kids sound interested as well. Just not sure what kind of music they want to do. Our church is flexible with music types, so I don't think that will be an issue. But we will have to purchase accompaniment cd's because they pianist doesn't want to commit to another activity at this time.

Deuce - I wish I could wait on that, but the elders want some plan ahead of time in writing, before we get started. I was leaning towards doing a Youth only song every other month and on the alternate months having them join the regular worship team, if that works with the worship coordinator.

fmckinnon - I did do that. But I was hoping to get some more personal and direct help here!

One option may be a 'special music' time a few times a month. This is where people from the congregation could sing a song (many churches do it during offering, etc.) with the backing track CDs. This approach can work out well, because it gives people a chance to sing without adding a bunch of extra responsibility to the worship team.
