I was concerned as I began today's study that it was going to lean too much toward legalism, which is at the heart of my struggle to be genuine, but it actually caused me to focus on the wrongness of legalism.

The don'ts can become legalistic if we aren't careful--- "I don't smoke, I don't chew, and I don't go with girls who do."
But the don'ts in today's study are the don't treat God wrongly kind. Don't break his law for your own profit, don't despise what God has entrusted to us, don't dishonor our Master by how we live.

The do's can also be legalistic, if I do what I do for my own benefit or so that I can impress others about my (self-)righteousness. But again, the do's here are Godward, not manward. Do what is right, not what is wrong. Show mercy to others that mirrors the great mercy God shows us every day by not consuming us. Walk humbly-- remember Who is God and who is not.

My Daily Response

Much of what I have done "for God" was really for my own glory, so people would think I was a great Christian man.

God, it is not good, not enough, not acceptable for me to do my good works so people will have good thoughts about me. Teach me how to do good for your glory alone.

"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." 1 Peter 2:9

Very simply, I can declare His praise and be a light in the darkness by proclaiming the excellencies of Christ; specifically, how He has called me out of the filth of my darkness and has brought me into His glorious, magnificent, marvelous light. In other words, I can share my testimony with all who will listen to it.
