We generally just pull from past experience I guess. Not the best plan.

Google "stage design" "worship set design" etc. According to wikipedia, this can also be referred to as scenography.

The best way to have a better stage design is to make sure that your having the right props and lights. With this things, you can be sure of having an attractive stage. Great stage design is important on how your live talks turn out, and also pleasing to look at for a long period of time,
