Lightbulb TXT / Text Messaging Communication Tools?

I'm trying to find a way to send out mass text messages to people who choose to receive them.

The situation is with our young adult ministry which tends to get together last minute for a movie, dinner, a birthday party, etc. I want a way to send out a mass message to a pre-determined group so that we don't miss anybody and won't have to spend forever calling 50 people.

That said, does anyone know of a mass text messaging web application?

Slight clarification...

I did find gateways to send SMS but I am looking for a service that allows storage and sending all in the same place. Even if it is a self-hosted solution.

How about Twitter? I know it is limited to the amount of words, but it is not limited to the amount of notes sent and it's free. It would allow anyone to sign up, follow your feed and get that feed sent to their phone via text.

Facebook has features where you can cut on text alerts. You can't choose which things to get alerts from though. That is one way to mass communicate quickly though.

Maybe I am missing something, but I know that my wife can send me text messages from her computer using Outlook. Now, you would have to find out how each person's carrier handles this kind of thing, but if you could get that information, then you could just set up an email group in Outlook and then TXT away.

InWorship,

I think that's exactly what I was looking for. I'm gonna dig into it and see what it can do.

Plus, from reading another article on that guy's site, they give ministries a discount.

Thanks a bunch for your help.

Hey Chris,

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this stuff at use in Elevate. Let me know if you need any help or a guinea pig or something.
