I think its absolutely right that it depends on the congregation. In a "church for the unchurched" setting, a solo may bring the focus of newcomers' hearts to the person on stage in a "hey! look at me, look at me!" style of performance, while veteran worshippers may take the solo as an offering of "zamar." Personally I'm not a fan of solos as in van Halen, Santana, or someone, in worship. I saw Skillet in concert, and to me that's just what it was, a concert. Platforms raising and lowering the performers, and the guitarist and drummer taking individual unaccompanied exhibition solos.

I encourage my team to solo, and I will take a turn as well...BUT only after we look pretty hard at three things: Purpose, Context, and Appropriateness.
