...I picked up David Crowder*Band's "Church Music" the other day and have not been able to take it out of my CD player. I love it. Outstanding. And, I blast the volume every time I listen to it!
I was wondering if any of you have done or are planning on doing any songs from this album? I'm gravitating towards "SMS (Shine)" as a starter...

I have always been a DCB fan but I can't get into this one. The recording is really hard to listen to. It seems they threw everything including the kitchen sink, in on every track and limited it to death. I really like the song Shadows (still not crazy about the sound of the recording) and of course How He Loves which we are doing at our church. I heard rumor that there are acoustic versions of some of these songs. I would love to hear how they come across that way.

Being that my church leader only wants to utilize music that's "accessible by passive listeners" (read that: whats on the radio,) no, we don't use any DCB, and the only of his songs that our radio stations use is "Open Skies." He's just not radio friendly, therefore, unusable to our church.

I think there's a lot of stuff here for church, depending on the ambition of your team and your comfort level with re-arranging.
"God Almighty" would be a great song, which I may try to do at some point. So would "We Are Loved" and "Light & Shadows." I would love to do "Dance" without the vocal effects. I just saw DC*B last weekend and they did a lot of music from this record. Seeing them live makes you realize these songs are a lot more approachable than a first listen might make you think. I'm probably also approaching it from the point of view of someone who's done a bunch of Crowder in church already - "O Praise Him" is a regular with us, and I've done "Here is Our King", "There is No One Like You" "...foreverandever, etc..." and "We Won't Be Quiet" at different times. And, of course, "How He Loves," but I don't consider that a Crowder song. |

We got the new DC album and it’s growing on us. For our service we may do two songs off the album but that’s it. My husband and I pretty much stay clear of Crowder songs because they just don’t sound the same without all the bells and whistles he implements (all the loops he builds). Crowder has his own style, very innovative and a great musician, but we feel it’s more for “in your car enjoyment” not so much for services. Especially the new album.

While I love DCB's music, I've had a hard time implementing much of their stuff into my band. But I'm a youth director working with a youth band. While my kids can usually crank out the chords, Crowder's music is complex in its song structure. For example, a song might have a 16-bar first verse, then an 18-bar second verse, and two bridges where one follows a certain chord pattern but the second follows the same chord pattern in double-time with the lyrics sung the exact same way. But if I were in a band of adult musicians, I'm sure we'd be rockin' out to "Church Music".

I've done "How He Loves", but that isn't really Crowder (though I do use his lyric re-write).
We also did a really cool version of "Shadows" that fit perfectly with our sermon series.
