  • lyric wordsmiths help me please!

A few weeks back I woke up with Psalm 139:1-17 and Romans 8.38-39 - thinking how they both talk about distance - that for God's people in Christ, nothing in all creation can separate us from him. The verses and pre chorus are mostly reflections on the Psalm whereas the chorus's are Romans, so its kind of contrasting and linking the two passages.

One point is the chorus line "For neither depths of hell nor stars above can Keep us from your love". Originally the line was "depths of hell nor heavens above can keep us from you love" - because that's what the texts allude to esp verse 8 of the Psalm in regard to trying to escape from God's presence where they say "heavens" they mean more "the sky" than the "heavenly afterlife". But logically it sounds weird:for most for Christians in a worship song "heavens" conjures thoughts of "afterlife" not "sky" so "heavens above" doesn't work.
So "stars above" was my way of avoiding that: and in my thinking from my love of astronomy - stars are some of the mightiest, most massive and violent objects in all of the universe! And even our closest star - the Sun - is 152,000,000km away! My faith statement is that even they can't separate us from God's love.
I really debated this a lot and got feedback from some other Pastor's who could see the point of the lyric - which as Roman's says that that even the powers of hell can separate those of us who are "in Christ" from his love (not that Hell isn't a reality for those who are not "in Christ"). I nearly changed the line to "Powers of Hell" - but didn't because then you lose the poetry of distance in contrast with the next line "nor stars above".

Does it work or doesn't it?
If it doesn't do you have any other suggestions!!!???
