Hi all...

Ever since I've began my worship podcast, I've found that I had to discover new-to-me worship songs that, well, happened to be in the public domain. Don't greive my plight--where I'm at, the water's fine. More than fine, really.

Because we forget that our faith has two-thousand years that precede it. When we rediscover an old hymn, perhaps one that is not all-that-familiar, it's likened to discovering another jewel in the crown of the King. The poetry of times past can be far more powerful, more affecting than a lot of (but not all of) the worship being churned out today by the Nashville-machine.

In fact, one of the open secrets of today's new worship songs is that a large percentage of them borrow this same poetry for today. Songs like "My Saviour My God", "My Chains Are Gone", and "New Doxology", and artists like SOJOURN prove that ancient hymns can be tweeked for modern day audiences, where they can discover them anew.

When I began my podcast, I rediscovered how it feels to take an existing text, one that has been tried and proven through the centuries, update the archaic language, and craft a chorus based off the text itself, so that it is new and fresh. And time and again, I've been overwhelmed as to how pertinent today's worship can be, by using the worship of our forebearers.

My question is, do songwriters want to see for themselves how rich this field is? Have any of you purchased an old hymnal off eBay, brush off the dust, and go to work in discovering a song that's just itching to be rediscovered?

Is there an unspoken need as to how to translate an old hymn, with its lack of guitar chords and abundance of SATB stylings, complete in 3/4 time and littered with diminished and augmented chords, into a modern-day worship song equivalent? Is this an eTutorial that's just itching to be released?
