Hey Ya'll,
This Sunday we're in Week #2 of the "Happily Ever After" series at SSCC. This week's sub-title is "So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt".
(I already know about the Keith Green song, but it just won't fit here)
I'm not compelled to make "every song fit" - I'm building a nice set of songs for us to praise and worship with, but would love to have a closer that really sums up the sermon. I've not yet seen Pastor's notes, but this is the summary for that sermon:
Even though Egypt was the place of bondage, we find ourselves looking back to Egypt again and again looking for comfort and the familiar.
Egypt feeds our fleshly appetites
Remember we were slaves in Egypt
Egypt is a place we should leave in hasteAny ideas for an effective closer?

Sara Groves - "Painting Pictures of Eqypt". Rich lyric content. May be a little high for a male voice, but the lyrics are gender neutral.

There's a great song "I Will Never Be the Same Again" that talks about not returning to old ways. Can't remember who wrote it, but this sounds like a good fit.

There's a great tune from the Prince of Egypt soundtrack called "There Can Be Miracles When You Believe." I bet Kim could blow it out of the water.

I think "I will Never Be The Same Again" is a Darlene Z. tune, not sure if she wrote it, but seems like it was on the same album as "I Believe" "Let The PEace of God Reign" and "Jesus, Lover of my Soul"...
Not positive, but methinks I remember singing that song back in that era. It's a good one.

Hey, nice choices folks. I thought of Yes I Will/ Bebo Norman. Not exactly speaking of Egypt but this song turns the focus on Jesus and away from all other things in our lives.
Go to track listings for the "Try" CD and listen. (http://216.69.177.112/wma/bebonorman_try_Track10.wma)
Even if this isn't right for your needs its a great song of surrender. If you're in a hurry and need chords I've worked some out that work good in the Key of E. PM me if you want a copy.
good hunting

Hey Gang -
All incredible choices. I actually opted for a different one - "Rescue" by Desperation Band. It's not 100% thematic, but speaks of God rescuing us ... I love the line "where else can I go?" ... and it makes me think that even if we do/can go back to "Egypt" ... compared to God ... it's like "where else can I go".

Mandy,
Now THAT's an idea I should've gotten sooner. As beautiful as Josh Bruce as been looking in an elegant "Vanna White" dress @ KidJam these days, I might would prefer him to dress up and sing it.

Please tell me this service hasn't happened yet.
Painting Pictures of Egypt by Sara Groves. PERFECT. i'll even email you a chart and killer background powerpoint that shows a picture slowly emerging behind the lyrics. Please God, let them still need this. We did it 4 weeks ago. It was amazing.
