For trumpet players, this seems like a pretty sweet toy. I recently bought a Yamaha Silent Brass SB7-9, which is a trumpet mute with connections so I can play to headphones, an mp3 player, and my computer for some recording. It does muffle the sound a bit (of course, it is a mute), but taking the recording and applying some EQ, effects, etc, it can sound like a full/bright sound.
I'm interested in trying this out in a live setting so that the volume control will go through the board instead of the trumpet blasting louder than the band. Has any trumpet player out there used this (or a variation of it)? Is it useful in a live setting since the sound crew more control over the sound of the brass elements? What's your experience?
I'm gonna play with this new toy to see what I can do with it. Is anyone interested in knowing who this would work in a live setting (or even a recording session)?

I'm interested! Let us know how it turns out!
I don't know that I'd benefit from it in our setup though, as we have a large auditorium. I'd never be able to outplay the band!

That's me playing trumpet in church a little over a year ago. Man, I was chubby! I've lost about 30 lbs since then! hehe.

Russ asked me to chime in here.
Russ you are wearing Westone UM-1 earbuds there. As for outplaying the band... yeah not an issue for us. Although, the people right in front of you may have gotten a little more trumpet than the rest of us. I don't feel the need for a mute in our situation but I can see that it would be a potentially huge help in rooms a little bit smaller than our and lower. (We seat 1000 and people are as far as 80 feet from the most direct line to stage.)

Yeah, now that I look at the photo, I'm not wearing those black ones that I thought I was wearing. the ones I'm thinking about are smaller. Maybe I used them once or twice way back in the day.
Then there was the other kind that kind of stuck out sideways. Then the kind I wear now which actually seem to fit better. I guess it would be good to know what I wear! Ha!

I did a quick and dirty recording using the unit by playing just a verse of Jesus Loves Me. The first verse you'll hear is the unit with no effects through GarageBand. The second verse you'll hear uses effects in GarageBand to give it an open room sound.

I've not yet experimented with playing live (as I'm not with a band right now). I'm practicing some songs now. If I get to the point where I play live, I'll try to post a recording here so you can hear the results.
Russ, what songs did you play trumpet in? I'd like to get some ideas. Right now, I'm working on trumpet parts for Dancing Generation, Desert Song, and Our God.
