Well, tonight is the National Night Out (http://www.nationaltownwatch.org/nno) all across America. Minneapolis is surprisingly community oriented, so they make a big thing of this each year.
Our church has the unique opportunity of being very involved with the Minneapolis NNO this year. Scott, our lead pastor, was asked to open with a prayer and then he and I, along with our band, have been asked to open the music portion of the event, followed by a handful of local bands.
What is so unique about this is that the event is planned to be down on the riverfront, has been for months, but now in the background of all the music and food and booths will be the collapsed 35W bridge. I mean, we are literally a few hundred yards from the site of this tragedy.
Please pray for this event, and our churches involvement in it.
I really believe that it's no coincidence that this is the first year for MNPLS to have a pastor open the event with prayer and have a worship band open musically.
I really want to make an impact in our community, so please agree with us in prayer that God will use us to reach people tonight. It's not about getting people through the church doors, it's about being the church to people wherever we are. There are a lot of hurting people right now, and often in the wake of things like this people become a lot more open to God in their lives.
I can't wait to see what God has in store for tonight. I think it will be great.
What is NNO, you ask? If you're too lazy to click on the linky dink (http://www.nationaltownwatch.org/nno), just read this.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:
Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
