Hey folks,
My name is Jay Jennings and I lead worship at Freedom River Community Church in Raleigh, NC. FRCC is a seven-year-old Evangelical Free Church and we average 75-90 folks on any given Sunday. We're a very cool combination of rock/contemporary worship, rock-solid Bible-believing doctrine and an atmosphere that absolutely drips with the grace of Christ. Check us out at www.freedomriver.org.
God has REALLY blessed me through this church. The founding pastor, Ross Turner, was a longtime worship pastor. He was also my closest friend and mentor for several years before God called him to open the doors at FRCC. I realize that leading worship (as a volunteer) for a well-respected and highly talented worship pastor could be a nightmare. But Ross had an INCREDIBLY humble and supportive heart. The Worship Team had no bigger fan than Ross.
I said "was" because the Lord called Ross home. He suffered a massive heart attack in January 2004. It was a dark, dark time for FRCC. But once again, our Savior came to the rescue. He brought us a wonderful man of God, Dr. Scott Barfoot, to lead us.
I've been leading worship for about 12 years, first at New Haven Church (Raleigh/Cary, NC) from 1995-2000 and then at Freedom River since 2000. I have always done it as a volunteer. I work as TV Documentary Photographer at the local CBS affiliate. God has opened the doors for me to take some seminary classes recently. Not only will it be years before I would graduate, I'm really not sure what the Lord has in mind for me to do with it. Just being obedient.
A quick word about our Worship Team. First of all, since a worship pastor founded the church, it is loaded with a ton of gifted musicians. Despite our small membership, we actually have 16 people serving on the WT (that doesn't include the Tech Team). We have a different set of folks serving each week, usually seven folks...drummer, bass, keys/vocals, 2 guitar/vocalists and 2 singers. If we struggle with anything it would be a lack of polish. So far, it's been hard to be "tight" when you're constantly rotating the members of the WT.
Well, that's WAY too much info. If you got this far, you must not have much to do. Seriously, I do appreciate the opportunity to share with other folks serving in worship ministry. Thanks for the platform.
In Christ,
Jay
