We have had an intensive focus in our church lately on being true disciples of Christ and that it's really what God has called us to do for His Kingdom! This is a song that was birthed in my heart during one of our Pastor's sermons.

Salt & Light
©2010 Brian Rossi
Based on Matthew 5

Verse 1:
Lord, You sent us Your Son
As a living Sacrifice
By His blood we've been freed
Lord, you've given us new life

Pre-Chorus:
And it's all because of You
Lord my heart is longing to

Chorus:
I long to be, Your salt and Your light
Sharing Your love with the world
You've commanded me
To share the freedom that you bring
I give up myself, I place my trust in You
You are my God

Verse 2:
Like a bright and shining light
May the world truly see
That You live inside my heart
And you've come to set them free

So, I have grown very interested since a fellow TWC'er made mention of this "dynamic" on TWC.

1. I posted this song last evening.
2. There have been 61 views of this thread on TWC
3. The SoundCloud track has been played 14 times

Despite all of those things, no one has left any comments.

While I don't expect in less then 24 hours to receive feedback on posts, it is very interesting to me how some postings get immediate replies and others kind of just never get much "action" so to speak. Thouhts?

Brian, I saw your post early this morning, but couldn't listen, because the wife was asleep. Just listened to it.

We need more songs on this subject. Sadly, the church has almost totally abandoned the concept of us being salt and light to the world. I would like to see the TWCSW challenge us to write a song on the subject of personal evangelism one month.

Your song says what needs to be said in a good, singable way. It will be neat if someone adds an organ or something to the middle of it. It is a little longer than most of your songs, and I see that you found a way to liven up the percussion.

My pastor speaks regularly of the need for us to be salt and light. I will have our WL listen to this, and see if we can use it.

(My song words were posted 3 days ago, and no one has commented on them, either.)

We need more songs about missions and evangelism! We are always looking for songs for both our missions conference and for our local outreach conference. I'll share it with our staff.

Where are the guitars? Brian, I can hear some crazy good guitar parts for this song. REALLY wish I could record them for you!

Nice job on the vocals. Its a good song...kinda "bouncy"...I LIKE it!

Thanks guys for all of the feedback.

@Wannabe: I agree... worship music pretty much hasn't really focused much on this topic. Last one I can remember we used to do was called "I Have Destiny"

@bruce: thanks for the feedback and agreement on this issue.

@Smitty: If I played guitars they'd definitely be in there, but I don't play guitars. So, if someone is interested in recording guitars for it, I'm more than open to that. Let me know.

On a personal note, I'm kind of tossing / turning on the intro progression of the song. I had a friend of mine listen to it and when it started, they thought they were listening to a tune I wrote a month or so ago called I Draw Near To You (http://soundcloud.com/pian0dude/idrawneartoyou-april262010). I can't figure out if it's because I'm playing the piano parts very similar or what.. it's not entirely the same chord progression, but it sounds slightly similar. Thoughts / feedback / impressions?

Brian, it is very easy for our songs to begin sounding alike, especially when we are writing a lot of them, as you are. You have a "style" of playing piano, a style of singing, and it's more the style than the sameness. You can listen to songs that several members of this group have put on here or soundcloud, and if you listen to 3 or 4 of them in succession, they begin to sound alike. Somehow, that is the nature of the beast.

I know this doesn't help you with fixing anything, but you are not alone with this problem. I bet Chris Rice, Paul Baloche, Chris Tomlin, Darlene Zschech and most of the other prolific songwriters out there have the same problem.

And I think it would be a great idea for Smitty or some other guitarist to add some guitar to your track.

I like it! Very catchy, easy to sing. I love your chord chart, too. How do you do that? Is it a software program?
It might be nice to add in a strong female voice...something in the alto or soprano range to mix it up. Of course, maybe it's just 'cause I'm a female vocalist am I saying that. ;) Nice job!

Hi Brian,
I've just had no time to check-in the past few weeks until yesterday. I've been enjoying this along with "You Satisfy My Soul". Actually yesterday I had a chance for the first time to sit down and work on "Lord I Surrender To You." I hope to lay down a version before I leave for an extended holiday next month.

Same boat here. This is my busiest time (Summer) in the magazine publishing biz. And we're ADDING markets!!

So I get on and listen, but sometimes don't have time to lay down the helpful critique/feedback that WE ALL long for as writers.

That being said, I felt like the intro sounded very familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it. I don't think it sounds exactly like I Draw Near, but I do think it has a familar ring to it, because YOU wrote it!
