I'm in the beginning phase of designing a small group worship leading class that we will offer as a part of our equipping ministry. The class can go as long as 11 weeks (but doesn't have to).

So ...

1. Anyone out there doing this? What's the format? What materials/resources/curriculum do you use?

2. What's your favorite book that could be used as a "what leading worship is all about" primer?

3. What guitar and/or piano resources are best for helping players of various levels play worship tunes?

Thanks!

I did a primer to what you are doing using david crowders praise habit...I think that is a great book to start with ...really puts the heart of a worshiper in perspective

Matt Redman's book "The Unquenchable Worshipper" and Tim Hughes' book "Here I am to Worship" are two of my favorite books on the topic of worship/worship leading.

I, too, highly suggest Redman's "Unquenchable Worshipper" - it's really excellent.

Also, Vineyard's EQUIP series of DVD's are all excellent resources that I've used with out Youth Musicians with regularity. I don't show them straight through, but I do pick excerpts to show and then discuss, and it's worked GREAT to get a conversation going.

Trav,
I'll second shannon on the Vineyard DVD's .. i've not owned one, but have seen them in action .. they have a lot of stuff ... the most recent one even has Ableton loops, etc ... you can get mixing, playing, eliminate various instruments, lead with or without vocals, etc ... very interactive .. the iWorship series from Integrity was that way as well.

So .. you do all the work and send me your syllabus, ok? (grin) .. seriously, I've been talking that up around the office about eventually moving into some type of training or "school of worship" type thing.

I've threatened to get this for our worship teams... I went through the sample material a couple years back... seems pretty good...

Paul Baloche has an amazing DVD series we used at Canyon Ridge. Totally amazing stuff.

Just ordered them...I'm trusting you bud. :D I also want to get the Baloche DVDs but that's a little more than I can afford right now. I just sent an email to the finance guy at my church to see if we can get them.

Does anyone have any good resources for teaching a lesson on Biblical aspects of worship or is that covered in some of the material I just ordered?

Okay I didn't realize there were so many Equip DVDs. I cancelled my order. I'm not sure which ones to get. I'm just getting the Redman book.

Bill Hybels - Heart of the Artist, Thriving as an Artist in the Church. Excellent books that focus on what it means to be an artist in ministry, the artist moods and personalities, dealing with conflict and a number of other topics. I highly recommend them.

Darlene Zschech - Extravagant Worship. A great study on what it means to be an extravagant worshiper.

Jimmy & Carol Owens & Paul Baloche - God Songs. Excellent for building the songwriting and song-selecting aspects of lead-worshiping. It's especially good at developing musicality skills, teamwork in songwriting, and many aspects of writing good songs. This may be a little more focused topic than what you'd want to start with, but it could be an excellent book to use later as a focused series.

Travis -
Curious as to what you've found, if anything on this ... I know many of the suggestions here are hopefully good ... but curious to know what you worked out!

check out http://yancynotnancy.com/devotionals.html
There are a couple really great devotionals designed especially for worship teams.
Each lesson is only a page or so long, so it could be a fun addition to do at the beginning of the class.
