The kids met God tonight.
I don’t want to say “God showed up” as if we were unsure if His omnipresence would stretch into our youth room.
I will say that the kids got face to face the God who is always there ready to be a part of their lives.
Our high school ministry is in the middle of a series on “Walking Wisely”. Tonight’s message was on authentic faith. Very appropriate. What’s more wise than having an amazing relationship with God?
We decided that this series was going to feature several different speakers, including some non-staff of SSCC. Tonight we had Curtis Geary of Vertical Window and FBC Brunswick fame come and bring the Word. And did he bring it. He focussed on James 4:4-5 and drove it home with the kids. He spoke of how we can never have a good relationship with a God we don’t know well at all. He also spoke on the fact that many of use desire to hear from God but never seek after Him through prayer and the Bible.
Curtis is such a great communicator that I really think he set the stage for God to work on the hearts of the kids. When the praise and worship time began, it was so apparent that their hearts were touched. I saw kids who are usually talking and goofing off during the music were singing to their God with hands held high. I saw tears. I saw hearts broken over their ignorance of God. I saw God move.
The band seemed to have a new fire in them as they played Consuming Fire better than any song I’ve ever heard them play. Kevin nailed his guitar part. Cyle played out more than usual (a good thing). The singers were totally engaged with God and were not performing but rather really singing to God. I think Shannon might have had a heart attack had he sung out to God any more. They played a concert to God and it was incredible.
I’m pleased to say that worship happened tonight.
I think God will have the hearts of a few other high schoolers after tonight. I pray that we will continue to pour into these kids and help build them up and help them to seek after God. It was an amazing night.
Afterwards, all the kids from the music and tech teams went to Starbucks for a vision casting time with SSCC’s music director and leader. He really built these kids up and also made it clear that we haven’t arrived yet. I loved how he continued to praise them for their efforts so far and then also give them a vision of the future where we are better at our crafts, much bigger in size, using better equipment, and altogether are working to create an environment where God receives His due from the teenagers of Glynn County. I’m stoked.
