View Full Version : My Favorite Hillsong United ballads

Though Hillsong United has made huge contributions to the library of rockin' praise tunes, their power ballads are the songs I put on repeat for 20 listens at time ... Right now, here are my favorites.

The Stand (from United We Stand) - I introduced this song to our congregation at Easter and it has quickly become a favorite. This song embodies one of the best definitions of worship - that worship is simply our response to God. "So what can I say, what can I do, but offer this heart O God completely to You?"

From the Inside Out (from United We Stand) - I introduced this song to our youth back in February, and they loved it. We did it as a special a few weeks ago in the main service, and it was well received. From beginning to end, this song is amazing. As a songwriter, I'm challenged to put lyrics and melody to a chord structure and arrangement that *feel* right. This song does that for me. When I sing "... and the cry of my heart is bring You praise, from the inside out, Lord my soul cries out ...", I am *there* in mind, will, emotions, body.

Hosanna (from All of the Above) - This is the most recent song to *grab* me. The bridge is one of the best pieces of worship music writing I've ever heard - lyrically, melodically, and musically within the context of the song. I could listen to the bridge 20 times in a row ... wait, that's actually what I did last week. Brooke's description of the song here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=3sABWDaRX1E) is simple yet powerful. For me, this song defines what a *prophetic* song is. It embodies something God is saying to the Church right now. And our response, should be, "God save us! (Hosanna!)"

Saviour King (from All of the Above) - "You asked Your Son to carry this - the heavy cross - our weight of sin." This song is *heavy* - it's one of those songs where I can't decide if I want lie down on the floor and not move for an hour or if I want scream at the top of my lungs and lift weights (weird picture, I know). I'll put it like this. If you only have 12 minutes and 16 seconds to connect with God. Put this song on and see what happens.

Jesus Is (technically not from Hillsong United - it's from Hillsong London) - To explain this song, I need a caveat. [End times, the rapture, the tribulation ... I'm not clear on all these things. I fully believe Jesus will return to "judge the living and the dead" - but I don't know if it's going to happen the way I was taught growing up. Specifically, I'm not sure about the version of the Rapture described by the classic 80's bumper sticker "Attention: In case of rapture, this vehicle will be unmanned."] So, why all this rambling? My point is that Jesus Is is the kind of song I could imagine singing one minute on earth and the next minute in heaven. It's that powerful. I can get completely caught up in it.

Thanks, Travis -
I've gotta go back and recap some of those - "From the Inside Out" is on my radar - Joy (my wife) put me onto it and for whatever reason, I didn't connect with it ... but it grew on me quickly, and I almost lost my voice at the Hillsong United concert between that chorus and the "Reprise".

i've never been a big fan of hillsongs, they're stuff never got to me.

i've been real picky with them, but the songs i like, and i change the words around sometimes. are Where the love lasts forever (Hillsong london), none but jesus (amazing song), from the inside out, and salvation is here (but only every once in a while)

Jimmy -

I appreciate the way you threw in your dissenting opinion on this. You didn't try to make a bold statement about what you don't like about most hillsongs stuff or what's wrong with it. You were just honest and said, "their stuff never got to me."

So, if you can articulate it, help me out by describing what stuff "gets to you" and why.

Cheers!

dont get my wrong dood, hillsong stuff is good, but in my opinion most of their stuff are really good christian songs, just not good worship songs.

as far as worship songs, i adore any song that has good theology. we are supposed to worship in truth so theology in songs are a huge deal with me, this might sound pretty bad, but i am really picky with worship songs, maybe because its my job to play good worship songs, so i have a very small list of songs i listen to in my free time. but i really like creeds, corperate scripture readings, poems and slam poetry.

the stuff that gets me is mostly old hymns (i love how their vocal flow match the time signature), i love passion's stuff, i've never been a big third day fan, but they have an amazing song called "Our Great God. i like 2 or 3 songs of the new chris tomlin album.

We are actually rehearsing 'From the Inside Out' right now for introduction at our Youth Group, which is called - not at all ironically - INSIDE OUT.

Far and above my favorite two Hillsong United ballads: "There is Nothing Like" and - well, not Hillsong United per se, bu Hillsong London's EXCELLENT "Above All", which we also hope to add to the youth set sometime in the near future.

Friend, we have MUCH in common - you need to read the little thread I started (http://www.theworshipcommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106) sometime back. ;-) I also rewrote my post - with a bit clearer wording - on my MYSPACE PAGE (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=8964217&blogID=256773006&Mytoken=3F288F91-0802-45EE-B54EC8C0203E68C768671086). Please chime in.

I get what you mean.It is vital that while we worship in song that the song be true, and in accord with the Word.I totally agree with you.

Okay, so check it out. I have a thirteen-year-old girl in my youth group that has the kind of potential that makes me giddy as a worship leader to develop. I'm serious, this girl (given the right song and enough warm-up time) can WAIL. We did Hosanna at our Sunday Night service and she led it, or to put it more accurately, she had her way with it.

It was POWERFUL! Amber captured all the little nuances of the instrumental (a neat little chord progression: C#m-E-F#m-G#m) and her pitch was PERFECT, even on the parts that require a little falsetto, which was surprising. All in all, I give her :) :) :) :) smileys out of four.

Anywho, so Hosanna is probably my new favorite worship song for the time being because of this.
