Finally got this song recorded--my second attempt at producing my own stuff. It's certainly not limited to a Christmas song, but I tried to frame it in a Christmasy light. The "shaker" is a set of brass door keys, and the "chime" sound at the intro is an E-tuned mandolin struck with a screwdriver. Don't worry--it's a $30 Rogue piece of junk. Pretty unique vibe, though. It's called "Hymn for the Morning." Here's the link...

Trent,
Wow - this sounds great. Your voice is exceptional, and I really like the production quality, love the way you are layering the song, adding the strings the 2nd time through, etc.
I'd love to see a print of the lyrics ... can you post them here?

Thanks for the encouraging words, Fred. I am a sucker for string parts, being a violinist...it's great though--I can layer as many as I want and it doesn't cost me a penny! A young gal in our church is dancing to this song in our Christmas concert--I'm excited to see it choreographed. Also, as you all know, myspace sound quality sucks, so anyone who wants a nice MP3, let me know privately and I'll send it along with chord chart free. It's Christmas after all. :)
“Hymn for the Morning”
by Trent Smith
There is a message
A story of hope for the earth
Sent down from heaven, a gift of infinite worth
Deep in the night, a baby was born
One tiny cry that could calm any storm
Love shines new every morning
Pure as the warming of early light
I will look to the dawning
Mercy’s awake, and the soul’s alive
Mercy’s awake, and the soul is alive.
There is a mountain
Stained with the blood of my Friend
Sins were forgiven, never to own me again.
The cross where He died, was not the end
He crucified Death when He rose up again
(chorus)
There is a mansion
With rooms as big as the sea;
A place at the table for fools and sinners like me.
Run to the door, it’s opening wide,
Weary and worn, you are welcome inside,
Where the

Wow, that's really cool, Trent. I love that chiming sound. Screwdriver, huh?

Trent,
Having the lyrics in front of me, and listening to this on my studio monitors this AM - wow, it's even better. Lyrically, so rich. I can easily hear this spinning on contemporary christian radio. I can also see this done as specials in churches.
Great work.
