Okay, so I was thinking about doing the hymn, "The Love of God", which is an oldie but a goody, but I just can't figure out what one of the lines means, and I'm not going to stand in front of the congregation and ask them to sing something when I don't know what it means. The line I'm wondering about is "The guilty pair bow down with care." Maybe it's obvious and I'm just missing it. Anyone know what that means?

I guess I always thought it referred to the highest star and lowest hell, but now that I see it in context, I think it's a hypothetical (maybe a couple out of wedlock?).
The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.

It refers to Adam and Eve, and then through the fall, all of us.

That's what I was thinking.

It makes so much sense now!
Thanks. :D

When I was a kid I always imagined a pathetic, sobbing piece of fruit.
I had other issues, too.

I was going to assume Adam and Eve as well.

Mercy Me has a great version of this song. We did it a few weeks ago.
