I'm shamefully stealing this from another messageboard I belong to (a Lord of the Rings site, not a music site, btw). Anyway, it's one of those threads that can generate some good discussion or can just be for fun.

I don't listen exclusively to Christian music, so I will have the occasional secular song listed.

(For example, Great Big Sea, Something Beautiful just started playing. Truthfully, the lyrics are pretty spot on, as far as Christianity goes.

Hey You, you lost your only friend
You can‘t believe your broken heart will ever mend
But every mountain has its faces that‘d make you want to stop
On this so unwelcome journey from the bottom to the top.

Move along
I believe there‘s Something Beautiful to see
Move along
I believe there‘s Something Beautiful
Just waiting for you and me

I know you‘ll never count the tears you‘ve cried
Though you’ve asked a million questions
No one could tell you why
A single soul is chosen to be the one put to the test
But there will be some consolation for a heart that never rests

The years will make us older
The winters make us colder
And there‘s one more thing I‘ve come to know for sure
There‘s no bitterness that smolders, no chip on any shoulder
That a random act of kindness couldn‘t cure. )

Anyway, what I am listening to right now this. As far as Christian music goes, the next on my iPod lineup is:

Faust, Midas, and Myself by Switchfoot.

:)

So what are you listening to right now?

I am listening to "Where You Go I Go" By Brian and Jenn Johnson. It is one of the most awesome worship songs out there. If you want to hear it you can go to http://www.myspace.com/brianandjennjohnson and it will be the song playing. I guarentee that this song will draw you right into His presence. It does me everytime.

Most recently I've been randomly spinning:

Sting & the Police (Shannon's favorites) - an ITunes compilation of all my personal fav's: basically Sting's "Fields of Gold" comp + The Police's "Every Breath You Take - the Classics" + my additional pics.

Matt Redman - "Beautiful News" cd

Tim Hughes - "Hold Nothing Back" cd

West Coast Revival - WCR (self-titled) cd

Arvo Part - "De Profundis" (performed by Paul Hiller & the Theatre of Voices)

Arvo Part - "Orient & Occident"

The Fray - "How to save a Life"

The soundtrack from the movie "Once," a great indie flick that won the 2007 audience award at the Sundance film fesitval. Check out some of the music at http://www.myspace.com/oncethemovie. Especially check out the song "Falling Slowly." It's a beautiful swelling number that seems to captures the duality of the guy and girl singing. It's a raw, rough folk song that what it makes up for what it lacks in polished performance with pure emotion.

God knows I love new music, but sometimes I've just gotta go with the oldies...
I've spent this whole weekend with a personal ITunes comp of EVERYTHING worthwhile that the Zombies ever put out (ex.: "She's not There", "Time of the Season", "Tell her No"), including unreleased material, and later tunage by Argent and Blunstone. Wow. That's about all I can say - just "Wow".
Makes me smile.

Awesome! Just played that this Sunday. The choir sang along for special music. It sounded very good, especially considering that the choir hadn't practiced it all that much. Great song! :)

Thanks, Russ -

It motivates me and discourages me at the same time ... the only two original praise songs on WUTS of mine were several years old - and I've not released a new instrumental since 1996, although the tunes on IH (instrumental) are my new album in progress.

Hoping to start writing more and more.

I don't know. It's a little different for me. I just sit down and songs sort of happen. My trouble is that I'm so critical of my own songwriting that I tend to can a lot of my stuff before ever getting it onto the page.

And just to stay on topic, I'm currently listening to the new Hillsong United album: All of the Above.

So, my wife & I have really been enjoying "Ready", "Holiday", "Say It", & "World that Breaks" by Britt Nicole from her Sparrow Record debut "SAY IT". I'm usually not a friend of 'pop', yet this is PURE pop and (apart from the first single -"You" - does it not suprise you that Christian radio chooses to play the song that stinks?) I totally dig it. It's like a cross between early Madonna (except better vocals), 'Girl-Power' pop-punk, & techno-pop, but written from a Christian perspective. "Ready", in particular, is one of the catchiest songs I've heard in years. Let's just say that I'm proud that my bro-n-law is her touring keyboardist and current co-writer. GOOD STUFF!

Family Force 5 are a TON of fun! I saw them live a lil over a month ago and they are really great guys. The songs are not focused on worship, but the hearts of the guys seem to be in the right place. They started the night by saying "We are Family Force 5 and we love Jesus Christ and want to share that love with you". Very impressive...

wow...thats a really cool story to tell your grandkids one day..thats sweet

SaintLewis
07-12-2007, 01:58 PM
Sadly, I wasn't part of the team, then - but don't worry, I have FAR better stories to share with my grandkids than that. Like the time I insulted Bruce Cockburn to his face about his guitar playing (I'm an idiot and just couldn't get the words to come out right), or the time I insulted Rich Mullin's life-long friend & producer, Reed Arvin, to his face (again, I'm just an idiot and am often not quiet enough with my opinions, and I HAD NO IDEA who 'Reed Arvin' was till about a month later when I saw his interview in the Rich Mullin documentary and my heart sunk - what a sweet guy, though), or the time I made Michael Stipe of R.E.M. spill his coffee 'cause I'm a klutz, or...man, the list goes on. My grandkids will have many years to laugh at me.

P.S. - back to favorite songs...

I'm really loving "Let Your Kingdom Come" by Sov. Grace Ministries right now, as well as Vicky Beeching's "There's No One Like Our God". As far as secular music goes, I've been digging Pink Floyd's "Money" & Rush's "Tom Sawyer" as we're doing 'cleaned up' versions of both as live 'walk in' songs over the next few weeks at youth group.

dude what did you say to cockburn...?

SaintLewis
07-13-2007, 08:28 AM
I told Bruce he "played guitar all wrong" (I was VERY nervous) - he looked at me like he was trying to feel me out - figuring out whether or not I was kidding...what I was TRYING to put into words is the fact that he played a rock song, with distortion, on electric guitar, FINGERPICKING - without a guitar pick: it's not wrong, but it just was AMAZING and baffled me as to HOW to could get the sounds he was getting playing fingerstyle guitar. Seriously, if you've never seen Bruce live, it'll leave you at a loss for words - absolutely astounding. I understand how he was good enough to play at woodstock at 16.

Anyway...yeah, namesdropping: I don't know if that's EXACTLY what I'd call it. I guess I consider 'names-dropping' the instances of "I was hanging out with so-n-so because I'm so cool and we did such and such", and I DO have a very limited number of those stories, but most of mine are the "Strangely enough I ended up someplace and accidentally made a hiney of myself then realized the person I made a fool out of myself in front of was someone famous". I'm a real dork.

I was watching an old MADTV re-run where they were doing a sketch parodying that show on E! where they salute an artist by having a lot of other artists do their song. Anyway, they did a Whitney Houston salute and had Bjork do "I Will Always Love You."

The lady who was Bjork is also Miss Swan, the asian manicurist on the show. Funny stuff. I would tag it, but it's got some wordy dirds in it.

I can't get The Almost out of rotation on my iPod!

I'm continuing the ongoing trend of making completely off-topic comments, then following it up with a brief sentence about the current song on my iPod.

I'm listening to No Sweeter Name by Kari Jobe.

The sound of our ticket printer not working... it beeps when it is stuck, meaning we have to void and reissue everything that anyone was just trying to issue.

*beep*

Soon, I'll be listening to the sound of the ticket printer sailing through the window. *mwahahahha*

I am listening to A remake of the great hymns "I surrender all" by Matt Papa.

Great worship writer. His song "Who Is Like You" is the best worship song I have heard in years. He is a Maranatha! artist but I think you can get his stuff on iTunes.

I love party shuffle on iTunes. It never fails to put the weirdest song combos back-to-back.

First Cool Hive - Moby - Electronica/Dance
Black Flag - King's X - Metal
Letters of Lorraine - John Wills - Folk
Digital Bath - Deftones - Metal
Pulaski Skyway - Clutch - Rock
40 - U2 - Rock
Wait For The Sun - PFR - Rock
Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix - Rock

Just jamming to a little Jonny Lang. I heard one of his songs on a friend's myspace and I thought to myself, I said: "Self, you haven't listened to Jonny in a while."

So I did.
