I've been scouring the internet for a place for this and so far, nothing... and I'm not sure it's going on here, either, but I thought I'd at least put this out there and see what I might learn...
I've been looking for a community where we can discuss specific sounds/settings we use for different worship music that works well. For instance, I'm currently playing a Korg Triton Pro and it's been new to me since early summer. Last night we were practicing (at worship practice) "Glory in the Highest" (Chris Tomlin) and I tried out the Hero's Piano setting (Bank C 070 on my keyboard) and the worship team was like WOW! I've done this song previously with them but this really added something that we all liked. So...
Is there a place out there (or in here) that I can find a community to share this kind of into (and more importantly since I'm so NEW at this, learn something)?
Thanks,
Cindi

Although I am not a keyboard player, I think you found the right place for this. I want to create a similar thread for our new soundboard where we can share effects settings and the like.

Hmmmm although I'm not currently playing a Triton Pro, that's awesome. I love it when we find stuff like that. I figured out a while ago that if you stick a keyboard through a Boss RV5 guitar pedal (it's stereo hehe), you can get some intense stuff out of it. Especially the modulate setting with a rhodes. I'm currently in love with the FantomX stuff. JPstrings seems to be the best pad all around - live sounds guys and mixing engineers have asked where I found it. I replied... "Fantom factory sound haha"... should have tried to take credit for it :-). Also their EP and Piano expansions are ridiculous. Then again nothing's quite like Reason Refills. haha.
:-) yeah I'm kinda a nerd

I'm on a Triton LE (hate the keys-but the sounds are ok)...
I "direct" from either the Triton (with a laptop to run some loopy stuff) or from my acoustic. Occasionally I play the drums.
As far as doing trippy stuff with the keys, I'm not really into that too much. Not because it's not cool, but we have a small band, and sometimes a good ol' wurly (amp-driven) or EP pad is necessary to just fill in the gaps. Especially, that one Sunday when my guitarist, and bass player didn't show, so it was me, my keys and laptop, and a drummer. But it was fun...
Ian, where would one go about looking for "modules" etc, to begin cranking up the "real" factor of sounds for a midi rig? I'd be willing to look at another piece to hook up to the LE and use it as a controller of sorts, but funds are limited so I have to "build" my keys empire slowly...haha.

We have an LE as well...how do you set up (straight through system, through an amp, etc.) and what are some of your favorite voices? Also, what's the easiest way for us to get some new voices?
I'm not the keys player. Thanks!

Well honestly, the real stuff could be running Reason from a laptop and getting whatever refills you want... they are very big on the real thing. I prefer the Fantom Rack with the expansions. Honestly the Fantom expansions are nothing short of stunning if you make sure you get the ones you actually want. (there are 2 piano ones.. the classical is the way to go hehe). But without the expansions they're nice too, just not ABSOLUTELY AMAZINGLY SPECTACULAR hahaha. Although FYI I have the Fantom Rack with the SRX 12 expansion (EPs) and thats it. I love UltimateGrand, JPStrings, and PureEP(off the card), and then there's another SoftPad of some sort that's nice too. That plus my Boss RV5 seems to cover most of my needs

One of the cooler things I've seen was at Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL, where a friend of mine, Trevor, used to play keys. There was a guy who had some sort of Leslie control pedal that he plugged into his Roland X-7 to control the organ sounds. This guy could absolutely shred, too. He was an absolute beast.
They were messing around one night with the worship leader "preaching" and Trevor was using this thing to do the "preaching chords" that organists will sometimes use to follow preachers. It was hilarious. A total knockoff of TD Jakes.

I'm honestly not even following half of this stuff (running loopy stuff from your laptop?) but it's an interesting thread. I'm really just looking for people who play keys and can offer different sounds (voices?) that work well for them on different worship songs... but perhaps I'll learn a thing or two from this great sharing :)

Cindi,
Thanks so much for starting it off ... you've definitely found the place, and just based on the responses, it's cool to see so many people interested in sharing their favorite keyboard patches.

Heh "loopy stuff" = running "drum loops" etc. from my laptop. Haha.
My favorite patch though would probably have to be some of the B3 sounds, I love rocking the organ patches on tunes.
On the Triton LE, the patches aren't the greatest, but they get the job done.

Ah - something that sounds familiar. Yes, for our more rocking praise tunes I'm a big B3 user -- usually the perc organ on the Triton.
Why do you hate your Triton keys? I'm so surprised to hear anyone say this. So you've downloaded other expansion packs on your Triton? Favorites? I see Ian mention Reason... we haven't expanded at all but the more I read, the more I'm thinking about it. I feel like I'm not using 90% of what I already have so why expand... but then I feel like I'm not using it because what I need is *different* from what came off the rack...

You can take this statement very literally! I hate the LE because of the short keyboard and small "keys" ... I'm a PIANO player at the core, so I have to really adjust when it comes to playing these undersized key keyboards. That's what I mean by hating the "keys"...
I love the TRITON itself. Sequencer is pretty user friendly, I've done some tracks on it for some holiday stuff and enjoyed it. I've actually used the Hero's Piano on several occasions as well, mostly when I'm playing alone, because it's such a broad, grand sound...I'll also use it in sections of music when the band comes down to almost nothing. But in my opinion, using it for an entire sound [could/might] muddy up the overall sound a bit.
I've used some of the octacve strings on a song we do called "Not Forgotten" by Israel (New Breed)...it works well in the middle when it breaks down to the less intense part.
I've not yet downloaded any expansions or patches for the Triton, though. Where would I begin that process?

Are you saying you don't have 88 keys or the keys are smaller than a piano? I was so happy to have weighted keys I didn't even notice if the size is different from my piano. I go back and forth all the time so maybe this just isn't something I notice?

Yes, both. If your keys are weighted, than they are "standard" piano size, but if not they're usually a little smaller.
I have the Triton LE 61 key version. It's a nice keyboard for the sequencer and patches, but for actual playing I'm all thumbs on it. The keys are slightly smaller, so they're closer together. Which means I play a lot of notes I don't intend to! Just a matter of practicing though.

Ah - I just assumed even the smaller keyboards still had standard-size keys. Good to know and I'd have trouble with this, too. Thanks for the info :)

61 keys? And you live through it without wanting to chew off your fingers?

Let's just say that...it's not MY keyboard, it belongs to the church.
It is annoying, but I do what I gotta do. I play keys about twice a month, the other times I'm on drums or guitar. Sometimes I'll even do keys AND guitar in one gathering.
So, it is annoying, but not the end of the world. I think if ALL I did was play keys I might kick small woodland creatues.

I like the B3 stuff as well. What's your experience with playing with weighted keys. I played keyboard for a while at my last church. When I played with a B3 sound I'd use a keyboad with non-weighted keys. I would do a lot of slides and chirps and such. When I try to do all that with a weighted keyboard it just doesn't feel the same and pretty difficult to do...for me at least.

I agree, there's nothing more painful then trying to do a slide up the keys on a weighted keyboard! haha...
I've actually tried it on a piano once not paying attention to what I was doing, and actually drew blood.
I think for me, especially after last nights rehearsal, for using an organ patch, it's a whole lot "mo betta" if you have non-weighted keys. We're doing 2 very organ friendly songs: Better Than Life and Your Love is Beautiful and man I had SO much fun playing keys last night.
Let's just put it this way, you know in Your Love is Beautiful from the Hillsong recording where they go into a massive percussion break? Well, seeing as that we don't have massive percussion, we're doing a massive organ and bass solo break there, should be fun, I get to go crazy on the keys!! Yay!

What you need is the old double stack, Triton on top, some other sweet 88 weighted keys keyboard on the bottom, some nice headphones, one side on, one side off, and while we're at it we'll throw in a turn table.

No, no, no!
We've got to throw in two turn tables and a microphone!

Maybe use some "bottles and cans and just clap your hand and just clap your hands." But that leads to the inevitable question..."where it's at?"

Oh wow. Only on TWC can a discussion about keyboard sounds turn into people randomly bursting into Beck lyrics.
