The Elephant In The Room – Should Worship Leaders Be Paid?

August 30, 2010

Re-posted with permission from Brenton Brown.

I’m sure it hasn’t escaped your notice that there’s definitely an awkward incongruity with the genre of music we call ‘worship’. My job as a worship leader, my primary purpose – really the only purpose – is to lift the name of Jesus above every other name and to help others do the same. To lift His name above all the other names and words and tasks and things and people that clamor for our attention in this world. As worship leaders this is our task. We are to simply lead others and indeed even our own souls in the worship of God. Read more

How to Find Great Worship Songs

August 27, 2010

I am always looking for great songs.

Oftentimes I am invited to play for an event, I try to find particular songs that speak to the theme of that event.  When I play for liturgies, I try to find exceptional, congregational-friendly songs that coincide with the readings, the seasons, and the antiphon texts.  When I play for a worship event, I try to find the recent songs that are fitting for those in attendance.  Even when I look for songs to adorn my own MP3 player, I now search for songs based on specific themes that compliment those characteristics that I wish to embody: growing in courage, in patience, in familial love. Aaron Keyes “Blessing And Honour” – Story Behind The Song

August 25, 2010

Blessing And Honour by Aaron Keyes

The song is from his debut album, Not Guilty Anymore, that releases TODAY and which Foursquare.org says is “a rich and rewarding release from Aaron Keyes that spans the centuries to deliver a powerhouse of worship…Keyes does not offer us trite phrases and clichéd language, but instead presents the words of a true worshiper grounded in solid theology and love for Jesus, which lends a hymnic quality to the whole album…this album will be a treasure for those who find it.”

A few years ago my band was leading worship and we began to flow into singing prophetically, singing new songs, and this chorus spontaneously came out, “Blessing and honour, glory and power, be unto your Name oh Lord.” I kept singing it over and over, and the presence of God was really stirring in the room. Sometime weeks later I was meditating on Proverbs 18 where it talks about the Name of the Lord being a strong tower, and I was also looking at Psalm 22:22 (which speaks of declaring the Name of the Lord in the great assembly) and Philippians 2, how the Father has given his Son the Name that is above all other names.

TWC Interview: Jeremy Camp – We Cry Out – The Worship Project

August 20, 2010

Returning to his worship artist roots with his 6th recording project, We Cry Out, Jeremy Camp is bringing it back full circle. I had a chance to chat with him on the phone and talk about returning to a more “worship” driven album.

As the hot summer days wind down, you can find Jeremy writing and working with artist Adam Cappa. They’re working hard on an album that will release next spring. He’s also getting ready to tour this fall with artists, John Mark McMillan and Carlos Whittaker. Jeremy’s family is not unlike yours and mine, he’s just getting his kids back in the swing of a new school year. Read more

Tools For Worship Arts Ministry

August 18, 2010

David Lindner shares a list of ESSENTIAL tools for worship arts ministry:

1.) Planning Center Online

Okay, this is what sparked the debate in our last podcast. It’s an extremely useful to, especially if you’re more the artist personality and less of the organized type. If you always feel like you’re behind in scheduling or in keeping in touch with the volunteers you work with, you’ll love it. If you like to plan ahead, it’s great because you can just go to the plan you’re thinking of, ad in an idea or two for that weekend and then when you’re ready to finish the plan – you have it – right there!

What is Visual Worship?

August 16, 2010

As I’ve been on the road having conversations with pastors, worship leaders & techies who are all trying to figure out how creativity works in worship, I have had a growing burden to gain a clearer understanding of what true, biblical worship is. I have much to learn and more scripture to dig into than i can comprehend. Here are some of the main things that have stuck with me, and here are some questions I’m asking myself in hopes of finding the answer to “What is Visual Worship?”.

How Much Diversity Should We Use in Song Selection for Worship?

August 13, 2010

I think this is a great question that can be applied to ANY size church. Rick’s answer is solid and he really gives some good advice about SERVING God and the people through our song selection.

Karen Thornton serving in Dundas, Ontario asks:

QUESTION:Diversity In Musical Style?

“Do you think it’s wise in a “small” church to have such a diversity in musical style like you do at Saddleback or should the Worship teams try to be aligned and consistent in the same style?”
