Worship is NOT about Singing
March 12, 2010
In I AM NOT THE WORSHIP LEADER I explained that I am unable to actually lead anyone into the presence of God, for that is Christ’s job – it was accomplished by his work on the cross on our behalf, and is applied in the present by the Father’s call, and the Spirit’s work in our hearts. However, there is a sense in which I do fulfill an important roll in the Body of Christ as a “Worship Leader”, but without a Biblical understanding of what worship is, we’ll never fully fulfill that roll.
What makes you feel valued? Gifts? A phone call? Has anyone ever sung – or better yet, written – a song for you? Speaking to the fellows – Guys, if you know that you aren’t the most attractive pup in the litter and you want to get married one day, buy an instrument NOW, and START WRITING! Being sung to makes a lady feel good – a very effective dating tool! Read more
Wallflower Jesus?
March 1, 2010
My pastor recently preached from the Gospel text of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana in Galilee (I encourage you to read it again from John 2). He spoke about Jewish weddings and how they are often loud and raucous affairs. I have only been to one, but can attest that it was quite the party. He then led us through an interesting exercise where we imagined Jesus at the wedding.

“Imagine That” Review

Imagine That
by Manuel Luz
“We create because we are made in the image of the Creator. We simply cannot help it.”
Dear Manuel:
I was recently asked to read and review “Imagine That.” I was eager, and quickly moved Read more
Sitting Down (For the Record)
October 12, 2009
During worship, I sometimes sit.
You’ve seen me. But then I disappear when everyone else stands, because now I’m hiding behind the dozens of standing bodies of everybody else worshipping. I’m still there. But I’m sitting.
Theology Of Music, Part One
September 14, 2009
What is the purpose of music? Does it even have a purpose? Is it good, bad or neutral? Does God care about music? Should I care about music? These are questions that every Christian needs to answer to be able to live out 1 Corinthians 10:31.

Obsessed With Perfection?
September 1, 2009
This spring I had a big goof up as I led worship one Sunday. I won’t bore you with details but let’s just say it was terribly embarrassing! And although I HATED with all of my heart to mess up like that, particularly on our new pastor’s first Sunday, it gave me some food for thought.
Caught In The Show
August 18, 2009
As a worship leader, there has been a definite lesson to learn along the way and one that I am still endeavoring to work out in my own life to the point of mastery. It is that of not getting caught up in the performance of the “show”.
Don Poythress, ‘Wash Away’ Review
August 17, 2009
From the start, Wash Away doesn’t look or sound like a typical worship album. This one rings with country music in a fresh and surprising way. Fresh, because most worship albums are filled with swirling electric guitars, synth, and rock drums. Surprising, because the country style isn’t led with an old-time gospel feel. It’s pushed by the tones of contemporary country/rock.

Don’t Try to Impress Me
August 10, 2009
I’ve been to a lot of church services and I’m not easily impressed.
Baptist, Pentecostal, non-denominational. Lutheran, Presbyterian, reformed, unreformed.
I’ve sat in pews, folding chairs, benches, swinging movie-style seats…
