Should Worship Be Fun?

More than once I’ve heard Christians claim that worship should be fun, or act like they had a responsibility to prove that Christians knew how to “party” in church. I’ve always been uncomfortable with that connection, so I started thinking about the place of “fun” in worship, if one even exists. I’d like to address this question

Review: Kathryn Scott – We Still Believe + Free Chord Charts

August 9, 2010

We Still Believe: Live Worship from Kathryn Scott is available tomorrow, August 10, 2010. Free chord charts  and We Still Believe EPK video below.

Thanks to Kim Castro for providing this review:

Kathryn Scott’s new solo album “We Still Believe” is her third offering after “Satisfy” in 2003 and “I Belong” in 2007. I was excited to have the opportunity to review this album because “Hungry”, the worship song she penned in 1999, is one of my all time favorites-one we still use in our worship sets today.

Review: The Medicine By John Mark McMillian

July 16, 2010

Review provided by Jesse Gordon. Thanks for taking the time to review for The Worship Community!

Last week, John Mark McMillan released “The Medicine”, his much anticipated new studio project.  While most everyone has heard “How He Loves”, I was anxious to hear what this new collection had to offer.  My initial impression was that this is an album that’s going to get a lot of plays on my iPod.

The album as a whole feels to me more like a collection of songs than an overarching narrative, although that doesn’t detract from the quality of the songs.  I found that the majority of the songs aren’t really appropriate for congregational singing, but there are 4 songs that I feel are ready to be sung corporately.  These are “Skeleton Bones”, “Dress Us Up”, “My Only”, and “How He Loves”.

The Art of Succession: Part One

May 3, 2010

I’ve been inspired by the Holy Spirit lately to become a better leader.  Isn’t it great, first of all, that I can say “inspired to become” over “convicted that I’m not?”  I love what Bill Johnson posted on his twitter account a few months ago:

“In a culture of honor, we celebrate who people are without tripping over who they are not.”

I think this is true of the Holy Spirit, too.  I think more often than not, what we experience as “conviction” is really the Holy Spirit attempting to “inspire” us into something, but we’ve learned so much negative language in a church ill-informed of the nature of God that we receive his Word as an indictment of our wrongdoing rather than a challenge to live in a higher truth.

The Importance Of Songwriting (One Writer’s Story)

April 29, 2010

Greetings fellow worshipers!

I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you how amazing God has been in the area of working on songwriting lately with His people.  Being a part of The Worship Community Songwriters Group has been a huge blessing and encouragement to me.  Let me provide a little background for you.

It all started around age 10 or so for me.  I began playing “Father I Adore You” by ear at my family piano.  By family piano, I mean, it was a family heirloom or sorts.  Slowly, as years went by, I started to learn some of the songs my church would sing back in the day and plunk them out to the best of my ability.  My parents felt I had some creative potential so they enrolled me in some lessons.  I slowly began to play for small bible studies and also help out on the church worship team from time to time.  One thing bothered me though… I didn’t seem to possess the ability to write songs.  I envied everyone that could.  I always asked God why I couldn’t write songs.  I was very frustrated by it.

6 Tips for Memorizing Lyrics

April 27, 2010

In my experience, having the lyrics to our worship songs memorized makes me a better worship leader…period.

Only when I have eliminated the distraction of worrying about what comes next can I authentically communicate the spirit of the song. Here are a few techniques that I have found useful. Hopefully, you will too.

Sitting Down (For the Record)

October 12, 2009

church-chair-ls-522During worship, I sometimes sit.

You’ve seen me.  But then I disappear when everyone else stands, because now I’m hiding behind the dozens of standing bodies of everybody else worshipping.  I’m still there. But I’m sitting.

Theology Of Music, Part One

September 14, 2009

a_funny_music_note_000What is the purpose of music? Does it even have a purpose? Is it good, bad or neutral? Does God care about music? Should I care about music? These are questions that every Christian needs to answer to be able to live out 1 Corinthians 10:31.
