Review: Beautiful Things by Gungor

February 16, 2010

The Live Experience

Every once in a while a person gets to experience what will soon be known as a pivotal moment in the history of music and art. I believe that I have experienced this. It might never happen again in my lifetime, but as I sat mesmerized by the haunting and beautiful lyrical artistry painted by Michael and Lisa Gungor, I knew in my heart of hearts that this was something greater than I had ever experienced before.

Few times in my life have I ever been blown away, let alone Read more

CD REVIEW: Kyle Jones – ALIVE

January 18, 2010

Kyle Jones
ALIVE
Independent

Someone told me about a year ago that one of the “new” youth pastors in town also led worship, but our community has an abundance of gifted worship leaders, so I paid him little attention. As his debut full-length c.d. shows, that was a huge mistake.

Review of GLORY IN THE HIGHEST- Chris Tomlin

December 1, 2009

christomlin_gloryinthehighestI just love Christmas. Really, I do. Except for the few months following the holiday season, I could literally listen to Christmas music for hours. (In fact I annoy everyone in my office by starting to play Christmas music on July 3rd!) That being said, I have anticipated this album’s release since February when my friends from Nashville wrote about their experience in recording this live album with Chris. Most of their comments were so powerful and exciting that I knew something special was waiting in this release.

Imagine That by Manuel Luz

November 2, 2009

imagine-thatIn Imagine That: Discovering your Unique Role as a Christian Artist, Manuel Luz, the Creative Arts Pastor for Oak Hills Church in Folsom, California, compares Jazz music to Biblical community, claims that the Levites of the Old Testament had the “ultimate gig” and makes a convincing case for art as a spiritual discipline.

Review – Jared Anderson

September 21, 2009

Jared Anderson has been best known for his work with the Desperation Band and New Life Church in Colorado Springs.  Through those ministries, you may know him as the writer of songs like ‘Rescue’ and ‘Amazed’.  I became a fan through his 2008 project, ‘Where Faith Comes From’ because, frankly, it made me smile!  His writing style is distinctively piano-driven, simple yet profound, and joy-provoking.

Book Review: Taking Flight with Creativity

September 16, 2009

51-vdidj6el_ss500_-300x300I recently received a copy of the new book by Len Wilson and Jason Moore titled “Taking Flight with Creativity: Worship Design Teams that Work.” Since getting started in worship media and design I’ve followed their career and writings since they were involved with Ginghamsburg Church in Tipp City, Ohio. They now run Midnight Oil Productions.

Your Jesus Is Too Safe – Jared C. Wilson

September 2, 2009

jesustoosafeTwice this Summer I found myself in conversations with pastors of large churches who were frustrated by the severe lack of theological understanding among otherwise very skilled worship leaders, especially among many of the most creative. Both pastors had generally come to the conclusion that creativity and talent rarely go hand-in-hand with any more than the most basic of Biblical understandings.  As a worship leader, I am convinced that to worship Christ fully we must know him truly, but I can understand these pastor’s frustrations because over the course of my years in ministry I have run into plenty of worship leaders who were far more interested in the latest and greatest fads of the faith, constantly exploring and chasing down the next mystical experience, rather than studying, and standing firm on a solid, Evangelical understanding of the Word of God.  Worship leaders, if you are impatient with systematic/Biblical theology, but are willing to take a step towards having a bigger, more full-orbed picture of the Biblical Jesus, then read on – this book will be of interest to you.

Review – Matt Papa

August 23, 2009

mp-tent-coverThere has been lots of attention and talk given to Matt Papa’s new CD “Your Kingdom Come” from Centricity Music. With a fairly distinct style, a certain lyrical straightforwardness and comparisons to Keith Green, Matt has captured peoples’ focus with this album.

I’ve listened through to Robin Mark’s newest CD “Year of Grace” a couple of times and one thing is for sure - if you are a fan of Robin Mark, you will like this CD. This 12-song CD was recorded live at North Syracuse Baptist Church in Syracuse, NY back in January and produced by Paul Mills.

Here’s a quick blurb from Robin that was posted on his site about this album -

The Syracuse Live recording was a big success and many thanks to the 1500 people that filled North Syracuse Baptist to capacity (and more) and lent their voices to a great time of worship. Paul Mills (producer) reckons he has captured the event completely and is delighted with the results. release date still to be confirmed. Album title likely to be “Year of Grace”. Explanation to follow!!

Robin Mark is probably best known for his “Revival In Belfast” albums but you Read more
