Hence the reason on a Sunday off I tend to find myself drifting to an Episcopalian or other high church done well. The richness of the liturgy. Now if we could combine that richness with a preaching of an exclusive Gospel of Christ and no "do-goodism" I might convert.

We, in Christian leadership, are forever trying to figure out what "works" well and then, what works better--all the time striving to somehow measure the "success" of our efforts and validate ourselves. We place an extraordinary emphasis on production value and try to spiritualize it. We are obsessed with style, trading authenticity for "relevancy." We stand on stage with closed eyes wearing the title of "worship leader" and have the audacity to suggest that our job is to get people to emulate us.

No wonder they're bored. They're only seeing us--and we're not all that exciting.

Jesus is.

Maybe if we go away and let Jesus have the stage they'll stop being bored. Some of them might get downright uncomfortable--perish the thought!

"How do we come to him with more of our emotions, needs and experiences?"

That sentence has my head spinning. Folks we are talking about worshipping the almighty God, it has NOTHING to do with our needs. I have to disagree with almost everything in the "Narrow Aims" problem section, in fact I'd say the problem is exactly the opposite of that.

The church has much too broad of aims in worship in that it has become more about how we feel, our experiences and needs, the lighting, if we're excited by the songs or bored and not about who God is and his place to be worshipped above all, through all and to not have anything but Jesus mediate our worship. If you can't worship because you are bored then that's idolatry. Straight up.

Now there's nothing wrong with reworking our musical execution to bring freshness, raise the quality level etc... I do that constantly. If you've followed my blog or know me at all you know I try and push creative bounds with looping and such. But I can't elevate all that garbage, it's just utility. To say we need a broader goal in worship and bring more of our needs and experiences I think misses the point big time.

I say all that with love.
