Thoughts on Accountability

Thanks to Steve Ball for sharing these insights with The Worship Community!

In my view, accountability is very much under-rated and under-valued.  Too often I see situations (sadly, too frequently in churches) spiral out of control and eventually cause real damage; and at the heart of the issue is a lack of accountability. Some people may see accountability as a threat, others as a hindrance to their vision or leadership.  But I believe if a culture of accountability is developed in any area of life, it can only lead to more positive outcomes – for everyone. 5 Tips for New Worship Leaders

Thanks to Andrew Woodell of Ocean’s Edge School of Worship for sharing these insights with us!

So you start next week at a new church. And you’re in a panic, wondering, “What songs should I do, what amp should I bring, what outfit should I wear?” But then your spirit wakes up, smacks you and says, “Wait, what?”

It’s easy to reduce the calling of worship leading to simply doing songs, leading singing, or getting great tone. But honestly, we know that Satan is busy trying to get us to exchange God’s best for something less. Don’t buy into that first instinct to worry about songs and the outward appearance. Focus on the more important things. In light of that, here are 5 solid tips to build on! [Read more...]

Practical Resource: How To Record Sermon Audio

How To: Record Sermon Audio

There are several ways to approach this.

  1. A dedicated digital recorder set up to record sermon audio (from your sound board – or a mic running directly into the recorder).
  2. A direct line from your sound board into your computer.

1. Running directly into a digital recorder and then later importing into your computer might be the route you take if you don’t have a laptop or computer for audio capture to run at church. Many smaller churches don’t have a lot of resources and need an economic option to fill their needs. A small, affordable digital recorder might fit the bill for you.

2. Running a direct line from your soundboard into your computer is probably the most efficient way to do this if you have an available laptop or computer and can run a direct line from your soundboard.

Turning A Battleship

Thanks to Travis Paulding, (Tech Director) at St. Simons Community Church for sharing these great insights with us today.

I was a chaplain for a high school soccer team for a few years and one season there was a kid on the team that was great at a few things but none of those things included making a cut on the soccer pitch. In the midst of a game the coach yelled at him “You turn like a battleship!” As you can probably imagine, he earned a new nickname that night. I also had a vision that stuck with me. A battleship is designed to do a lot of things well, changing direction is not one of them. They are big, strong, awe-inspiring war ships but they don’t turn on a dime.

Finding My Heart in a Bamboo Box

Thanks to Mat Reames for sharing these thoughts after traveling to and ministering in Nepal and India this summer.

Its 9:59 on a Sunday, the band is tuned up, the lights have been turned down, the countdown video is in its last few seconds, the guitarist has his foot tapping in the tempo of his dotted eight delays, and we are ready to begin worship.

The service begins loud as we introduce that new song that everyone will be talking about next week. People have their hands raised high, unless they are attempting to clap to the rhythm. But the key is, people are engaged.

Then you begin to see them. As your eyes adjust to the lower lighting you begin to notice the people who aren’t engaged. They are scattered around the room. You feel the frustration. Week in and week out you spend hours preparing for this service, choosing the songs, ordering the lights and videos, you have labored to prepare an atmosphere of worship. But with all the time, money, and of course blood, sweat, and tears, there are still people who just will not engage. As a worship leader this is one of the most difficult things to deal with…. Review: Walk by Will Retherford

Walk is the the latest project from Will Retherford.

And it’s one of my favorite worship albums of 2012.

Will’s bio reads:

Inspired to pursue music after an encounter with God during a worship service, Will Retherford has passionately honed and shared his gift since he was a teenager. Today, he not only writes his own music, but also leads worship at Oral Roberts University and Victory Church. More than music, Will is also passionate about missions and works overseas. He is on staff with the Oral Roberts Missions department, and travels overseas frequently throughout the year which lead him to give his proceeds from his first album “Awake” to an HIV Aids orphanage in Hyderabad.

Bringing his unique take on a sound that could be found on the sonic trail blazed by artists and writers like Gungor, Will makes a nice contribution to the soundscape of worship music with this project. The “sound” of the album pulses with a youthful and artistic energy, and most songs can be adapted for just about every environment for worship gatherings. [Read more...]
