Sunday Setlists #197

Share your worship confessionals, recaps, and setlists for the week of: Sunday, April 29, 2012

Welcome to the 197th consecutive week of “Sunday Setlists.” Hard to believe we’re only 3 away from TWO HUNDRED! The purpose of “Sunday Setlists” is to share a recap of your worship services. What songs did you use, what arrangements? What worked really well and what didn’t work as well as you’d like? What issues did you have preparing? What is the sermon series? How about creative elements used in the service? You don’t have to be the pastor or worship leader to participate. We would really love to get reviews from the perspective of those in our congregations each week.

Making Sure That Your Now Doesn’t Become Normal

“Success” in ministry has more to do with developing people than it does creating a team to out rock all teams. Sure we need to pursue excellence, sure we need chemistry, sure we need to rehearse together, flow together, pray together, etc…

But a tight rhythm section or regular vocals that the congregation sees every week isn’t a sign of success (when you dig a little deeper).

This means putting people first – before talent and/or spaces to be filled. Of course we should always be aware of positions and roles that need to be fulfilled, but we should never see people as just a set of skills. Sure that guy is a great guitarist and you could really use a great guitarist, but what you really need is a PERSON that will plug in to the vision of the ministry and commit to using their talents and skills to serve others. Review: Unhindered by Unhindered

Unhindered by Unhindered
Released: Jan 03, 2012

From the Press Release:

When Unhindered began as a band they’d no idea they’d one day write songs that would touch the nations.

“We were just a bunch of guys who wanted to see our God do something extravagant in our community”, explains guitarist/vocalist Pat Barrett, remembering their early days in a youth group praise band who soon found themselves leading worship at national gatherings of thousands, hands raised, abandoning themselves to God in unhindered praise. “It was raw, unhindered, intense…”, hence the name: Unhindered. Review: The Whole Big Story (EP) by TWC Member Kristen Gilles

Thanks to Mark Snyder of Tree Hill Collective for sharing this review with The Worship Community! We’re excited to feature and showcase fellow TWC member Kristen Gilles’ latest worship project: The Whole Big Story.

MySongInTheNight.com | NoiseTrade | BandCamp

Bobby and Kristen Gilles are part of Sojourn’s music ministry.  They are releasing their latest EP project The Whole Big Story on their website at mysonginthenight.com and via NoiseTrade.

The Whole Big Story has the ambitious goal of telling the story of God’s love for his people from Creation through our heavenly destiny, in only 4 songs. They chose a modern hymn style with each hymn text centering on a particular theme. Their musical direction, though, is much more adventurous than you might expect. [Read more...]

Behind the Scenes at TWC: Bobby Gilles Interviews Fred McKinnon & Russ Hutto

Thanks to Bobby Gilles at MySongInTheNight.com for taking the time to interview Fred McKinnon (founder of TWC) and Russ Hutto (Managing Editor of TWC). Originally published at: http://mysonginthenight.com/2012/03/27/help-for-worship-leaders-who-feel-isolated-my-twc-interview/

In 2007 a new kind of online experience for worship leaders launched, a truly grassroots initiative called The Worship Community (TWC). Founder Fred McKinnon already had a lot of experience as a worship leader and resource-provider for other leaders, through his HighestPraise.com, widely read personal blog, and position as Worship Director at St Simons Community Church.

The Worship Community has since connected many worship pastors, leaders and ministers-of-music across denominational, geographical, generational and cultural lines. City churches, country churches. Contemporary churches, traditional churches. Big churches, small churches. Members of TWC come from all these places, and interact daily on issues ranging from theology to media and tech, songwriting, leadership and everything else that comes with being a worship leader. Leading Worship With Scripture

Thanks to Gary Durbin for sharing this with TWC. Originally published at: http://garydurbin.blogspot.com/2012/04/leading-worship-with-scripture.html

About 10 years ago I started my first job as a worship leader in a church. I was 24, green and eager to grow. I went to my first music conference shortly after, and it wasn’t that great. It was pretty old school and very irrelevant to the vision God had given me regarding worship ministry.

But just like most things in life, you can always learn something. As bad as the conference was, I walked away learning something that has been very vital to my ministry. I attended one of the workshops they offered, and the teacher said something that stuck with me. He said that the most impacting thing we could give our crowd every week, during the music, was scripture. He challenged us to make sure we used scripture, somehow, someway, during every worship set we lead.
