Serving the Local Church with Songwriting – an Interview with Gary Gale Norris

Thanks to Mark Snyder of TreeHillCollective.com for sharing this interview with The Worship Community.

I recently had the opportunity to meet and interview Gary Gale Norris. Gary is a worship pastor at Discovery Church in Hickory, North Carolina, and shared a powerful testimony online about the difference a program of songwriting directed at his congregation had made in their worship. Gary graciously agreed to answer a few interview questions for TWC (Mark’s questions are in bold, Gary’s responses are in italics).

Resource: A Guidebook for Leading Fantastic Worship Rehearsals by TWC Member Rob Rash

Are you ready to take your worship team rehearsals to the next level?

TWC member Rob Rash has a great resource available for free. From Rob’s website:

Rehearsals are a strange thing. There’s no ‘right’ way to do them, however, there are a few key principles to keep in mind to make the most out of your time with your band.

If you struggle to lead a good rehearsal, don’t know where to start, or even if you are a seasoned veteran, I’d like to introduce you to my first ebook called ‘A Guidebook for Fantastic Worship Rehearsals.’ This is a very practical guide for taking your worship rehearsals from 1st gear to overdrive! 5 Reasons You Should Not Lead Worship This Sunday

Thanks to Fred McKinnon for sharing this post. Originally published at fredmckinnon.com.

It’s Monday morning. If you’re like most ministry leaders you wake up feeling completely drained from the day of ministry before. Turn on the coffee pot because as we all know that…

Sunday is coming…

Have you ever thought about what would happen if you didn’t show up to lead on a Sunday?

  • Would worship still occur?
  • Would your leadership team be able to adjust?
  • Would your congregation adapt? [Read more...]

Sunday Setlists #192

Share your worship confessionals, recaps, and setlists for the week of: Sunday, March 25, 2012

Welcome to the 192nd consecutive week of “Sunday Setlists”. The purpose of “Sunday Setlists” is to share a recap of your worship services. What songs did you use, what arrangements? What worked really well and what didn’t work as well as you’d like? What issues did you have preparing? What is the sermon series? How about creative elements used in the service? You don’t have to be the pastor or worship leader to participate. We would really love to get reviews from the perspective of those in our congregations each week.

Are We Willing To Drop Everything?

Last night an amazing thing happened at our “worship” rehearsal. We were plowing along tweaking verses and choruses, hammering out lead riffs and chord progressions, and adjusting in-ear monitor mix levels like we normally do.

As I recall, we were just getting ready to move into our last song and it happened.

There were two ladies who kind of just showed up in our auditorium and were having a “Jesus moment” right there at the altar. [Read more...]

Practical Resource: Beefing Up The Band With Digital Musicians

Thanks to Matthew Starner for sharing this article with The Worship Community. Originally published at matthewstarner.com

First a few key things to understand:

Generally speaking, I’m not in favor of replacing key instruments digitally. Our normal team consists of drums, bass, electric guitar and keyboard. Even if one of them were missing, I wouldn’t be comfortable replacing any of them with digital musicians because they’re too important. However, this does depend largely on your circumstances. If you’re just starting out and you have only a guitar player and vocalist (and they’re both you) then you’re going to have to find a way to enhance your sound. There are options for this such as Worship Backing Band. [Read more...]

Review + Giveaway: At All Cost by Reveal Worship Ministries

It’s common to see us review worship albums from well-known “big label” worship artists and we LOVE doing that. It’s also our heart to give a platform to the “small” independent worship artist as well. We can’t review every single project that comes across our desk (big or small) but when we can it’s exciting to see the heart and soul of the Church expressed in a real and tangible way through these “trench” worshipers.

Reveal Worship Ministries began working on their first worship album, At All Cost (iTunes), over a year ago. It took many Saturdays and a lot of extra hours after regular job days to complete this project, but RWM is proud of their self-produced, in-house worship album which goes live on iTunes today (March 13). How Do We Prepare For Worship?

Thanks to Steve Ball for sharing his thoughts with The Worship Community! Republished with permission – originally published here.

How we, as a worship team prepare for worship can impact what happens on a Sunday morning – and importantly, it’s not just the worship leader, but all of the worship team who need to be prepared. Yes, the worship leader may have the responsibility of choosing songs etc, but the whole team should be ready to go from the time they plug in or grab their mic.  If I turn up, late, not ready, no music and my thoughts on anything but worship, how am I going to be able to lead the church to worship?
