Welcome to the 136th consecutive week of “Sunday Setlists”. The purpose of “Sunday Setlists” is to share a recap of your worship services. What songs did you use, what arrangements? What worked really well and what didn’t work as well as you’d like? What issues did you have preparing? What is the sermon series? How about creative elements used in the service? You don’t have to be the pastor or worship leader to participate. We would really love to get reviews from the perspective of those in our congregations each week. [Read more...]

Video Tutorial: Using Ableton Live to Run Click/Loops in your Worship Service

There are quite a few ways to run a click track during your times of worship. This is just one way to do it. If you’re band is not using a click track, I would highly recommend it. When we began using it, it immediately tightened our sound and our band.

At first it is a learning process and its something you want to use at your rehearsals so that your band can become used to playing with it. But after some time practicing with it, it’ll become second nature and you’ll be amazed at the results. You’ll be able to incorporate loops which can really add to your songs.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’d be glad to help in any way I can. BrandonGilliamOnline.com | Twitter | Facebook

Holy Days: Ash Wednesday And Lent

Part of Holy Days – A series of articles dedicated to our Christian/Hebraic holidays and observances.

Hi. My name is Mandy. And I’m a 30-something guitar-playing worship leader & creative church staffer at a contemporary church and I love the ebb and flow of the Christian Calendar year.

Now, everybody say “Hi Mandy.”

Glad we got that out of the way. And what better time to confess my affection for the Christian Calendar than with my favorite holy day right around the corner. [Read more...]

The 30 Most Buzz Worthy Songs from CCLI (mid-2010)

The CCLI Top Lists are now updated, using the results of a survey of song usage to worship leaders around the country for the period between April 1, 2010 and September 30, 2010. You can find the results of the Top 25 songs at www.ccli.com.

It is at this time that I study the Top 2000 list, to find those songs that have been gaining traction over the prior year, so to find the songs that have been growing in buzz and interest over that time.

The following is the list of the Top 30 songs that has gained the greatest over that period of time. It can be assumed that these songs will be the standards of future worship lists, if they haven’t become standards already. If you are looking for new songs to inspire your church or worship team, or to build your own personal worship MP3 playlist, this is a good place to start. [Read more...]

Why I Became More Charismatic When I Became Reformed

I was raised in the Vineyard church, my dad was a worship leader in the Santa Barbara Vineyard and then later planted a Vineyard as the lead pastor in Lompoc CA. I was groomed in worship by some very talented musicians and worship leaders inside the Vineyard. I observed how these guys led worship, how they structured their songs, how they played their instrument…I was a sponge.

As I began to lead worship in my young teen years I went for it with everything I had. But at that point all I really had was a catalog of experiences, frustrations and longings, some painful, some joyful, some hopeful, some confused. As I’d lead there would be tears, shouts of joy, the full spectrum of “Charismatic” expression. I was a passionate kid that loved Jesus, wanted to know him and wanted to experience all I could. In fact one of my favorite songs to sing at the time was “I Want to Know You” by Brian Doerksen. Unfortunately, that “want” didn’t transition from fanciful longing to devoted journey until I turned 24. [Read more...]

Happy Valentine’s Day From The Worship Community

Love is patient, love is kind.

It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.

(from 1 Corinthians 13)

Dealing With Conflict

With eight years of experience as a worship leader at four churches, you could conclude that I don’t know how to hold down a worship leader position. But when you consider that I was always hired to be a change agent, usually hired to modernize the worship style from more traditionally rooted churches, you can imagine the risk that this presents in shortening the lifespan of any worship leader’s tenure.

I have certainly made mistakes but I have not wasted them through a lack of learning. What I have learned in dealing with conflict, I would like to share. [Read more...]
